SICM Day of Service

February 9, 2011

Dear SICM delegates and congregations,

            Would members of your congregation or youth group like to participate in service projects on Saturday morning, April 9?  At a recent SICM Assembly, delegates suggested a Service Day where groups from the SICM congregations could volunteer together to address needs in the community.  We are excited about this opportunity.

            Participants can sign up for projects at SICM programs, other nonprofit organizations, and member congregations. We expect to have service opportunities at the Food Pantry, Damien Center, SICM Offices, an Edible Playground Garden site, Hamilton Hill Arts Center, neighborhood outreach, advocacy letter-writing, hosting lunch for the volunteers at noon on the 9th, and similar projects. We are currently reaching out to other local nonprofits that may need our assistance.  We will soon send out additional information about the specific projects and how to sign up.

            In the interim, we ask that you:

-save the date and begin conversations with your members and youth groups about their interest in participating;
-let us know if your congregation has a service project need (such as painting or yard work) where a SICM volunteer team could help (3 hours maximum);
-consider asking your members if they would like to contribute towards Easter basket supplies (healthy snacks for kids, candy, coloring books and crayons and other craft supplies, and baskets).  One of the service projects will be to assemble Easter baskets to hand out to children through the Food Pantry.  We have an incredible number of kids who depend on the Pantry for food assistance (over 1,700 kids were served last month!), and the Easter baskets are a popular request.

            Volunteering in a group setting is rewarding, and it’s a nice way to get to know each other better.  If you have questions about this Day of Service, or if you wish to submit a work project suggestion for your congregation, contact Crys Hamelink at 374-2683 or crys@sicm.us.

Grace and peace,
Rev. Phil Grigsby
