Healthy Homes - Healthy People

Healthy Homes - Healthy People is a three-year project funded by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to promote environmental justice.  The project is addressing multiple environmental risks by educating low-income inner-city residents about the identification and proper disposal of common household hazardous wastes - and suggesting and encouraging the use of  alternative products.   In 2010 and 2011 Healthy Homes-Health People will bring a collection truck to an inner-city site and residents will to bring their household hazardous wastes for disposal free of change.  Incentives will include $10 gift certificates from a local grocery chain and paid permits to Schenectady County Farm Permits for 50 families living in the affected community. A Policy Advisory Committee, including representatives from SICM, Schenectady County, the Unitarian Society's Green Sanctuary Committee and the affected community meet regularly to share ideas, solve problems and brain storm.
